Hitch-hiking is an adventure in itself. However, while traveling we discover in people such kindness that amazes us and at the same time encourages us take an action. The way to give further a part of this goodness is voluntary. We can help people and animals for a short time or for years anywhere in the world. All of the following examples of volunteering requires the smallest contribution, often only cover travel expenses, which means that for hitch-hiker is just a smile. ;)

Although volunteering is usually associated with the heroic work in the toughest conditions, help is needed everywhere, even in Europe. The European Union encourages youth to spend their time for the European Voluntary Service commonly known as EVS. Through partnerships of various organizations we have a chance to volunteer for two to twelve months dealing with different subjects eg. the issue of national minorities in the UK, projects related to the protection of European wildlife in Portugal or stimulation of the local community in Italy. The organization covers all costs associated with accommodation, meals and even a pocket money for volunteers. It also provides reimbursement of travel expenses of 10-30%. According to a short sentence on the website – “Give a little help, stay for free”. In the simple browser you can find places where help is needed, and in return you will receive accommodation (sometimes also food and other amenities). Thanks to the cooperation with various organizations you can provide education programmes for kids in Cambodia, help maintain hostel for backpackers in Australia or be a guide to the world’s largest salt desert in Bolivia. On the Share Traveler you can read the interview (in English) with the founder of the portal, Shay Gleeson, for which they were explorers looking for inspiration challenges, willing to learn new skills and experiences around the world. 223898960_09229e20b5_o

A place that is associated with the most demanding voluntary organizations is Africa. On a website Volunteer Africa you can find many opportunities to help in countries such as Ghana, Uganda and Cameroon. Orphans or children taken away from their families in Kenya are waiting for care and educational support. You can also engage in a similar way in Cameroon. In South Africa it is organized an interesting programme called Izizwe Project, where people are welcome to encourage children to learn, among others, by dancing. In Kenya there is an interesting project organized by Brian Smith, who wants to activate young people through coaching basketball, which is his greatest passion. All over the world people are looking for volunteers willing to help in the development of poorer or forgotten places or simply in organizations with the idea that need to support to be developed.

We've met each other during classes the least associated with our faculty at the university and it couldn't be an accident. Silly grinning at our English teacher telling about his hitch-hiking adventures, we haven't known yet that we will begin to travel together. The series of unfortunate events made us share a tent, a camera and memories. Now almost nothing can stop us from hitch-hiking.
